Portland Gay Symphonic Band in Concert

Evans Auditorium, Lewis & Clark College

The Planets

Almost 100 years ago, British composer Gustav Holst became friends with the astrologer Clifford Bax, who introduced Holst to the concepts of astrology. Holst rediscovered his childhood intrigue with theosophy, and used for inspiration, the ideas written in Alan Leo's The Art of Synthesis, which is divided into chapters for each planet.

The Portland Gay Symphonic Band will hold a rare performance of this monumental work, as transcribed for wind band. Please come explore the musical ideas of the Roman Deities as perceived by the famous Gustav Holst.

This work will be presented alongside Antonin Dvorak's Serenade for Winds op.44, Hindemith's March from Symphonic Metamorphosis, and the beautiful and timeless chorale Salvation is Created by Pavel Tchesnokov.
