The Rose City Gay Freedom Bands’ Young Artist Solo Competition is open to all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students currently enrolled in their High School band program in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area. The competition is open to all students regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The winner of the competition will receive a $500 scholarship and the opportunity to perform at the Portland Gay Symphonic Band’s Spring Concert in April, 2018.
Applicants should fill out the entry form below and select a solo with full band or ensemble accompaniment (such as a concerto) or by approval of the adjudication jury. Submissions will be received as a high quality video recording of the soloist performing with piano accompaniment, made available to the jury via either YouTube link or video file submitted via the form below or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. The performance should be a complete and unedited version lasting no more than 10 minutes.
When submitting, please name any files with your full name, and use a regularly accessed email account.
Applications open Nov. 1 and close on Jan. 15, 2018. The deadline for video submissions is Jan. 31, 2018.
The winner will be announced on Feb. 9, 2018. The winner will be expected to attend three rehearsals with the Portland Gay Symphonic Band at Cleveland High School on March 14, 21 and April 11 between 7:15-9:15 pm and perform with the band on Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 at Kaul Auditorium on the Reed College campus. The $500 scholarship will be presented at the concert.
The Rose City Gay Freedom Bands is in its 27th year as a musical organization in Portland, Oregon. Our bands include the Portland Gay Symphonic Band, Rose City Swing, and the Portland Pride Band. Our mission is to promote and preserve artistic expression and education within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community and its allies, through instrumental music performance. RCGFB is open to all musicians and supporters regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We are thrilled to offer our first student solo competition and prize in 2018!
